This sandwich is like a burger stretched onto a baguette: a seasoned ground beef patty topped with melted cheese and slowly caramelized onions, plus fresh lettuce and tomato. Toasting the bread keeps it crisp and stops it getting soggy. It makes a satisfying lunch or casual dinner.

Caramelized Onion Beef Sandwich with Melted Cheese

Preparation Steps

1Step 1

Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over low to medium-low heat. Add the onions and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring now and then, until soft.

2Step 2

Sprinkle in the brown sugar and salt and keep cooking for 15 to 20 minutes more, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deep golden and jammy. Set aside.

3Step 3

Meanwhile, mix the ground beef with the salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika and Worcestershire sauce. Shape it into one long, flat patty (or two) to fit the length of the bread.

4Step 4

Cook the patty in a hot skillet over medium-high heat for 4 to 5 minutes per side, until well browned and 160°F (71°C) in the center. Lay the cheese on top for the last minute and cover the pan so it melts.

5Step 5

Split the baguette lengthwise and toast the cut sides in a pan or under the broiler until lightly crisp. Spread the mayonnaise or burger sauce on the bottom half.

6Step 6

Layer the lettuce and tomato on the bread, add the cheesy patty, then pile on the caramelized onions. Close the sandwich, cut it in half and serve warm.

Tips & Variations

  • Be patient with the onions: low heat and time give them their sweet flavor, while high heat will just burn them.
  • Try pepper jack cheese and a few pickled jalapenos for a spicy version, or use ground turkey cooked to 165°F (74°C).
  • Caramelized onions keep in the fridge for up to 4 days. Store leftover cooked beef for up to 3 days and reheat until steaming hot before assembling.
