Deep-Dish Meat Lover's Pizza Pie with Homemade Crust
This pizza pie is baked in a deep pan so it holds thick layers of meaty sauce, melted cheese and vegetables inside a homemade crust. It slices like a pie and is hearty enough for a family dinner or a weekend gathering.

Preparation Steps
Stir the yeast into the warm water and leave for 5 minutes, until foamy. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar and salt, then add the yeast mixture and olive oil and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead on a floured surface for 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, until doubled.
While the dough rises, brown the beef or sausage in a skillet over medium heat for 7 to 8 minutes, breaking it up, until no pink remains. Drain the fat, stir in the pizza sauce and simmer for 5 minutes. Let cool slightly.
Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9-inch (23 cm) springform pan or deep cake pan.
Roll the dough into a large circle about 14 inches (35 cm) across and press it into the pan so it covers the base and comes up the sides. Trim any excess.
Layer half the mozzarella, half the meat sauce, the mushrooms, peppers, pepperoni and cheddar, then repeat with the remaining mozzarella and meat sauce.
Top with the additional mozzarella, extra pepperoni and vegetables. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the crust is deep golden and the cheese is bubbling.
Let the pie rest for 10 minutes before releasing it from the pan and cutting into wedges.
Tips & Variations
- Resting the pie before slicing lets the filling set, so the wedges hold their shape.
- Store-bought pizza dough (about 1 1/2 lb / 680 g) works if you are short on time; let it come to room temperature before rolling.
- Wrap leftover slices and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven until steaming in the center.
